Modify Kill-A-Watt Power Meter to Tweet Daily KWH Info

March 26th, 2009

I bought a Kill-A-Watt power meter a couple of years ago to figure out how much power various computers, peripherals and gadgets I have use. Now, adafruit industries announced…

Tweet-a-Watt kits now available…

This Open Source hardware project tells you how to modify your own Kill-A-Watt to tweet power usage data. You can also buy prebuilt kits from adafruit. They have a Twitter account set up so you can see what the power info tweets look like: @tweetawatt.

PCs Left on Overnight Costs US Firms $2.8B/Year

March 25th, 2009

From USA Today…

Leaving PCs on overnight costs companies $2.8B a year

We’ve always known this wasteful behavior has a cost associated with it. Now, it has a number assigned to it and it is a big one. Windows users can Hibernate their PC. The only thing that struck me as odd about this tech geek oriented article was that it did not suggest switching to a gas-friendlier geek-appealing hybrid or bio-diesel car.

Automobile Gas Tip Myths Exposed

June 29th, 2008

The gas saving myths discussed in this article are:

  • Fill your tank early in the day
  • Replace air filters for better mileage
  • Buy fuel additives
  • Turn of air conditioner and roll down windows

Auto advances make gas advice moot

Rolling down the windows probably probably disrupts the car’s aerodynamic properties. But, you would think cranking down the air conditioner would provide the car more power (esp. uphill).

Microsoft Environment Site

June 25th, 2008

Both of these URLs lead you to the Microsoft Environment web site…

http://www.microsoft.com/environment/

http://www.microsoft.com/green/

I wonder how green the site itself is? It would be interesting to learn if Microsoft took any special effort to green the hardware and other aspects of this particular site.
