Phoronix: Linux vs. Windows Power Usage

Phoronix has an interesting power consumption comparison of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Fedora 8 Test 3, and Ubuntu 7.10.

Linux vs. Windows Power Usage

Windows XP was the lower power user among the group in both idle mode and well as when in use. This is no surprise to anyone who has tried to use Ubuntu or some other Linux distro on a  notebook only to find there is not apparent power management going on.

I’d be interested to see a more complex comparison in a server type situation. My gut instinct is that Linux may show better here because it perform similar tasks compared Windows Server using less RAM (thus reducing power consumption a bit for equivalent tasks).
