PCs Consume 80 Billion Kilowatt Hours Per Year?
The Information Week article…
Want To Save The Planet? Turn Off That PC
…is really just a commercial for Verdiem. But, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have some interesting information to share. The Gartner study referred to in the beginning of the article says that PCs account for 40% of all electricity used by the overall IT carbon-footprint. Data centers account for 23%. And, then, there’s that 80 billion kilowatt hours per year used by PCs worldwide.
I wonder what the managed (enterprise) vs. non-managed (small businesses and personal) PC breakdown is worldwide. A Verdiem type solution is good for managed enterprise PCs (and not all PCs in an enterprise are managed). But, I’m guessing that the vast majority of PCs are in small businesses and in the home.
